Choir performed a concert on Oct. 22 at Pacheco High. The performance featured a collaboration with Pacheco’s, Creekside Junior High’s, and Los Banos High’s choir groups.
The Los Banos High’s choir was divided into two groups, beginners and advanced. Advanced singers performed an Irish folk song called “Dulaman” by Cristi Cari Miller, while beginners performed a Scottish boat song called “Over the Sea to Skye” by Micheal Jothen. At the very end, all the schools sang together “The Journey” which concluded the concert.
Choir director, Mr. Dillon Nelson has the groups of students practice throughout the week. On Mondays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. while on Wednesdays they practice from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Students don’t automatically get a spot in the concert, they have to earn it, so these practices enforce a sort of friendly competition to improve on their singing skills, and earn their spot.
“All of our students are super talented, however there have been a few surprises of people who have been truly outstanding,” Nelson said.
Annabelle Pena (12) has been participating in choir for the last three years. Pena has been a very positive influence with the people around her. She’s very passionate about singing, always finding ways to improve her vocals, and achieve the impossible. During the performance she and her classmates were able to demonstrate great passion for choir.
“I was honestly nervous; these types of events aren’t easy and take so much time to prepare, but it’s worth it in the end because I can make the people who support me proud,” she said after her performance.
The season is still young, with a new concert approaching in under two months. The next concert will be on Dec. 11. Los Banos High will collaborate with Creekside Junior High, and will perform many holiday themed songs, just in time for the Christmas spirit. Even though this sounds jolly and fun, preparation doesn’t come as easy as the holiday spirit.
