The Seal of Biliteracy is a special recognition awarded to students who demonstrate proficiency in both English and another language. It represents not only academic achievement but also a commitment to cultural understanding and communication.
“The students that qualify have good grades in English and their world language class. Once they do this, they take a test in the world language,” said Joel Dickson, the coordinator overseeing the Seal of Biliteracy program.
After passing the language proficiency test, students are awarded the Seal of Biliteracy, which is added on their diploma. Dickson noted that the number of students earning the seal varies each year, and while many languages are offered, Spanish is the most commonly chosen.
For students like Nathan Riofrio (12), the seal represents more than just recognition but a lasting impact on his future.
“Knowing another language allows more job opportunities and better communication skills when it comes to speaking another language,” Riofrio explained.
The Seal of Biliteracy provides benefits that extend beyond high school. Students who earn the seal can highlight their bilingual abilities on college and job applications, explained Mr. Dickson. It also demonstrates discipline, dedication, and the ability to meet academic challenges.
Beyond the personal and professional advantages, the Seal of Biliteracy also encourages students to maintain and deepen their connection to their cultural heritage. For many students, it serves as a source of pride, acknowledging the value of their home language and family traditions.
Riofrio shared, “My motivation for taking the Spanish language test was my culture, since Spanish is my first language and an important part of who I am.”
The Seal of Biliteracy is more than a mark on a diploma, it’s a pathway to new opportunities, career advantages, and meaningful connections across cultures.
