emails i can’t send fwd: Review
April 8, 2023
In July of 2022, Sabrina Carpenter released her fifth studio album, emails i can’t send, which gained massive popularity on apps like Tik Tok and Instagram recently. This recent attention and her announcement of being on tour has brought Carpenter to release 4 deluxe tracks onto the album naming it, emails i can’t send fw:, which dropped on March 17, 2023.
Before getting into the deluxe album review, Carpenter tells the story on emails i can’t send about her perspective and personal experience on love, family, and breakups. She ends the album with the song, deocde which ends the album with her closure on a breakup she decides to move on from.
In light of me having tickets to go to her tour in April and absolutley loving the album, I’m going to rate and review these 4 deluxe tracks.
- opposite: 10/10
opposite is the first deluxe track on emails i can’t send fwd:. The song tells the story on her ex boyfriend moving on with a new girl and making their relationship public and proud. Sabrina sings about her contemplation and confusion with her ex’s descision, wondering what his new girl has that Sabrina didn’t and taking their physical differences as an insult. The catchy chorus, dramatic beat, and sad lyrics are what all make this song a perfect 10/10 for me. Sabrina perfectly portrays the dramatic and bittersweet feelings one goes through after a breakup, when their ex moves on before them. In a non-biased way as well, the song reminds me of the more melancholy version of Olivia Rodrigo’s song, deja vu, which is a song I absolutely love.
2. Feather: 10/10
The second song featured on the deluxe album is Feather. Sonically similar to her 3rd track on emails i can’t send, Read Your Mind, Feather is a pop track that portrays Sabrina’s elated and free feeling of cutting someone toxic off, stating she feels “so much lighter like a feather” with that person off her mind. I personally love this song and it’s been on repeat for days. The song gives a Dua Lipa pop-feel, but with positive lyrics to get anyone dancing. All around a 10/10 for me and for anyone who’s also trying to get over a breakup.
3. Lonesome: 6/10
Lonesome explores Sabrina Carpenter’s insecurities with her partner. Similar to opposite, Lonesome talks about Sabrina’s inner battle with coming to terms her partner has had exes or other romantic relationships with other girls, claiming she can’t get over his history. These insecurities seem to eat her alive in this melancholy, country-blues like song. I love the lyrics the song has and the vulnerability you can feel off of Sabrina, but this sort of genre is not my favorite to listen to on a day-to-day basis.
4. things i wish you said: 9/10
A perfect ending to a perfect album, things i wish you said is the opposite of decode, coming from a place of overthinking rather than closure. Sabrina lyrically narrates the song from her ex’s possible perspective of things she wished he said to her while they were in their relationship that could’ve changed their relationship for the better. In my opinion, I think this is a perfect, bittersweet ending to an album, showing extreme vulnerability about still overthinking and reflecting on a toxic relationship.
All around, I’m extremely impressed with the deluxe songs and think they fit extremely well into the vibe of the original album.
