Fire breaks out in the Ag mechanics building

Madison Richards

A fire broke out in the mechanics building forcing students and staff to evacuate the campus for almost two hours while the fire department arrived and investigated the building.

The fire started in the roof of the agriculture building which houses the wood shop, welding shop, and small engines shop.  An electric motor from an exhaust vent started smoking during third period, creating the smoke seen and smelled in the classroom.

The smoke from the motor spread fast along with the fire. Mr. Borelli, the welding instructor made the decision to go on top of the building with a fire extinguisher to stop the fire from spreading to other parts of the school.

After the firemen cleared the area, the power was turned off to the vent and the motor.  Both were fixed and the building and vents were approved for classes to resume after a few days.
