As the 2023-24 school year has started at LBHS, new sports/activities have increased. Los Banos High school and many other schools around the Central Valley were offered to create a Girls Flag Football team last spring.
The girls flag football team has a Varsity and Junior Varsity squad like all other sports. Ava Felix (11) grade varsity flag football player stated, “For the flag football team we have set games like any other team. We have set preseason tournaments almost like 7 on 7.”
Felix was questioned about the upcoming regular season said, “We have games every Thursday, and in total we have seven league games.”
The girls flag football team will be part of the WAC League schedule with teams like Lathrop, Mountain house, Pacheco, Orestimba, and Ceres. Two different teams that the league usually does not see in the WAC conference have been added such as Escalon and Mariposa. Both teams come from very good football programs.
LBHS Flag football also has regular CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs. On the schedule it states all the dates going from Oct 24 – Nov 4. Playoff brackets are determined on team league records and will be placed in seeds.
With the first season coming close, Felix said, “I feel great to be involved in something that is completely changing girls sports. It brings so much more opportunity to the girls that are not allowed to participate in male tackle football and I am very happy to be a part of it.”
When it comes to flag football or just regular football it’s truly a team game and everyone has to do their job. This topic also was brought up with Felix and she stated, “The team is going good so far. We have a very good set of girls that are athletic and are very sports-minded and truly work hard at their positions. We have a very great chance of doing good this season.”
Girls flag football’s first game was held on Sep 15 against Escalon 6 – 12. Thursday, September 21 is the next game.
