Los Banos High School physics teacher, Mr. Leonard accepted a new position as ASB teacher for the 2023-24 school year.
Mr. Leonard noticed a decline in school spirit and wanted to become an ASB teacher to help restore school spirit. He expressed, “I felt like I could help out.” Despite never having held an ASB teaching position, he has prior leadership experience. One being his role as Los Banos Tiger Sharks swim president.
This school year, Mr. Leonard hopes to make an impact on the school’s environment and empower the students. He prides the committee on focusing on the students and making their ideas become reality. He said, “ASB wouldn’t be possible without the kids.”
One thing he has already implemented this school year is birthday grams, which are expected for all birthdays. When someone is sent a birthday gram, they have their picture taken with a frame decorated by ASB and photos are posted on the school’s Instagram with their name and date of birth. Birthday grams are sent campus-wide, meaning anyone from custodians, teachers, to students.
Since his main focus is the students, he made the executive decision to take the ASB officers to a summer retreat called CADA, which stands for California Association of Directors of Activities. The retreat also was sponsored by California Association of Student Leaders (CASL). It took place at the UC Santa Barbara campus and this was Los Banos High Schools’ first time attending.
Fernanda Perez, ASB vice president, said, “CADA taught me many different things and helped me improve the student and leader I am. Through CADA camp and activities, I learned how to work better and provide for my school.”
She also said, “Mr. Leonard was able to adapt his ways of teaching to his students. Through activities that identified our personalities, he plans to work with our dynamics.”
The dynamic group includes leaders: ASB president Madison Jasso, Vice President Fernanda Perez, Secretary Caleb Robertson, Treasurer Amira Davis and ASB rep to the board Mariah Washington.
