On September 15, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Club hosted a celebration in the school’s quad to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month.
The club’s goal was to host an event that honored the start of Hispanic heritage and also to share it with others on campus. According to publicschoolreview.com, 79% of students at our school are Hispanic. With this being said, it is important to recognize the cultural backgrounds of Los Banos High school. To display Hispanic culture, the club played Mexican music and got a crowd of people to dance. To accompany the dancing, they handed out Mexican ice cream and popsicles donated by United Paleteria.
Destiny Garcia (12), LULAC treasurer said, “It was really fun to see people dance El Caballo Dorado.”
Garcia also said organizing the event was a lot of work that she, the other officers, and LULAC members took on. She said, “It was a long process of reaching out to an ice cream place, promoting the event, and getting approved for a certain day and location at school.”
Although the club celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month every year, the activities can differ. For example, last year’s celebration for the month entailed pan dulce for students and staff to eat.
The United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month every year from September 15 to October 15 to honor the importance and contributions of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and accomplishments of the country.
