On October 3 a new program called Youth 2 Youth (Y2Y) started with Ms. Teixeira as advisor. It originally started in 2022 as an alcohol and drug prevention program, but then it started helping students with their mental health and emotional health.
The goal of the program was to have high school students mentor 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. This program hopes that all students experience an opportunity to grow, heal, and learn from each other. Some of the main principles of the program include:
• Allow for self discovery
• Be youth led and youth driven
• Build personal and interpersonal skills
• Mandate physical and emotional safety
• Offer community engagement
• Promote healthy risk taking
• Utilize fun in all activities
The students meet once a week for an hour after school. They are do fun activities and eat snacks together while getting to know each other. This is a perfect way for students to connect with others and learn better social skills. It is very important for students to join this program because it is super beneficial to younger students.
Ms. Teixeira stated, “I’m looking for students who are strong leaders and positive role models.” This program is looking for students who are interested in going into social work, teaching, or counseling after college.
Students in the Y2Y program can improve their sense of wellbeing, communication skills, positive adult and peer relationships, community engagement, and school connection.
The program is supported by adult allies but driven by peer relationships. Ms. Teixeira stated, “I hope students will become inspired to help each other. Overall, I hope this program can help all students connect with each other so that all students feel a sense of belonging at school.”
The program was started by Merced county Behavioral Health and Recovery Services.
