The JV Tigers took on the Mountain House Mustangs for week six of the 2023/2024 football season. The Tigers are on pace to be undefeated in WAC and win the league for another time since 2020.
The game started off with the defense getting a safety for the Tigers which gave them a 2-0 lead. This gave the offense momentum to go ahead and give quarterback Joshua Gargano (10) a 15 yard rushing touchdown to make it a 9-0 game. The defense held up on three downs and forced a punt on fourth down. This led to another rushing touchdown from Gargano for five yards. The Mustangs received the ball and desperately needed a score before halftime. They ended up scoring a touchdown with very little time left in the second quarter.
At halftime, the score was 16-7 with the Tigers having a nine point lead. Their defensive coordinator Garret Mentz had them pumped up and ready to come out even better in the 2nd half.
Coming into halftime, Gargano said, “We are hyped and very confident right now, but we cannot take them lightly. We’re ready to take their undefeated record away.” The Tigers and Mustangs were both fighting for the number one spot in the league. Gargano finished the game with 190 total yards and three touchdowns.
The Tigers received the ball coming into the third quarter. The offense paced down the field and Jack Goodger (10) had a 15 yard reception for a touchdown. The Mustangs scored shortly after and made it a 22-14 ball game. With the game being cut down to a one score game, the Tigers punted the ball and desperately needed a stop. The Tiger defense knew they were going to get the stop. Carmello Smith (10) intercepted the quarterback’s pass and took it all the way back for a pick six. When asked what the play of the game was, Austin Rivera (10) said, “The play of the game definitely has to be Carmello’s pick six. That play was the exclamation point of the game.”
The final score was 28-14 with the Tigers now being the number one team in the league.
