The search for the perfect senior quotes have officially started! One of the most anticipated things most graduates look forward to when they purchase their yearbooks is the time-honored tradition of senior quotes. Flipping through the pages and reading quotes that accompany their peers’ senior portraits is a fun way to learn more about their peers’ personalities and life lessons.
Seniors can now pick up the form in room 43 and begin working on their quote for the yearbook and turn them in by November third.
Senior quotes are a way for students to leave their mark for their senior year and represent themselves and their high school career with some words of wisdom, encouragement, or even humor. The best part of senior quotes is everyone can do something different, something unique that reflects them and their personality that they can look back on.
Senior, America Ordunez said she wants her quote to reflect her personality and while she wants it to be deep and meaningful. She also wants her quote to be funny and bring a smile or laugh to everyone reading it.
Ordunez said she is looking through song lyrics, Pinterest, and even words of wisdom from her parents that they have given her to get her through her high school career.
Senior, Madison Jasso said she wants her quote to be a phrase that defines her or something that represents a crazy and fun experience in her life that she can look back on and remember.
Most students use the web and social media to look for good quotes, some use whatever comes to mind, some use song lyrics, and some even use movie quotes.
Senior Mario Arellano said he wants to use a movie quote or something that comes to his mind, a phrase that he says often that other students will know represents him and his character.
Some of the most common and funny quotes consist of:
“I’m a senior but I stay fresh man.” -Anonymous
“Goodbye past, hello future.” -Unknown
“Your future is only as good as the work you put into it.” -Unknown
“The tassel’s worth the hassle.” -Unknown
It is well known that senior quotes are a sentimental time to create something that they will forever remember about these four years of school life and have a deep meaning to them. While many people use humor for their quotes and love a good laugh, these are the moments and a milestone in their last year of high school that they will always remember and reflect on in their futures.
Arellano said, “I want my quote to be something funny that I can look back on and remember my high school years.”
Jasso said, “My quote is something that I can look back on and remember like nostalgia.”
Ordunez said, “I want it to be something sentimental that reflects my high school career.”
While LBHS still does senior quotes, some schools have stopped for several reasons. They have stopped because the number of students who actually submit a quote is fewer than in past years and some schools were experiencing a lack of originality and creativity from the students. They felt students were using less of their own words and phrases and just using song lyrics, movie quotes, etc. Another reason some schools did away with senior quotes is that often high school students push boundaries with inside jokes and obscure references that are risky and the time to cross-check submissions are time consuming.
Mrs. McCullough, the yearbook advisor said, “Students can submit two quotes for approval. We ask for two because often the first choice is inappropriate. It takes a lot of time on my end to figure out if a quote actually has a double meaning, and with our yearbook deadlines, the staff does not have a lot of time to check everything.”
If quotes are questioned by Mrs. McCullough and the administration, the quote is not used. McCullough reported, “Students often complain when their quote is denied, and many say we are censoring them, but in the long run, the yearbook should be a fun and positive experience for everyone. There are so many wonderful things to say to represent yourself under your picture. Think and chose wisely.”
Luckily, Tiger seniors are full of creativity and are aiming for original, unique quotes that represent them as a person and give people a small insight into who they are and have been through high school. Senior quotes are due November 3 in room 43.
