Environmental Club has jump started the year with a campus cleanup along with a volunteer park day to promote the importance of community and school involvement.
On September 29, the club had over 30 participants in picking up litter on the campus. Club members were able to find a shocking hot spot of litter behind bushes towards the front of the school. After working collaboratively to clean the campus, the club was able to collect eight bags worth of litter.
According to the club’s vice president, Fernanda Perez (12), the club plans on hosting campus clean ups at least once a month so all members get the chance to help the environment and open their eyes to the issue of littering.
In addition to the campus cleanup, the Environmental Club had its members attend a community park day on October 7 where local community members were asked to paint basketball courts, plant trees, and replace old bark chips with newer ones. Although this was not a club sponsored event, many members of the club still offered up their morning to unite with the community and aid in the park’s renovations.
Club treasurer, Grant Jones (12) said, “It was really awesome to see community members of all ages attend the event and paint the court while enjoying the company of others. The city workers directing the event were nothing but help and were constantly offering us water, donuts, and asking when we needed a refill on paint.”
Club advisor Mr. Salaz authorizes the officers to conduct their monthly meetings in his room 406 during lunch. Since the October meeting has already been held, the future meeting date will be sometime in November. Unfortunately, October 13 was the last day for new members to join.
