September 20, 2023 the Los Banos High School Band competed at Pitman High School. The band and color guard performed The Directorate by John Phillip Sousa while winter percussion performed a piece titled Bill Nye. The competition started at 9:50 AM for percussion and 10:05 AM for band and color guard.
In preparation of the competition, band members were expected to memorize the music piece and were expected to attend practice after school, every Monday and Wednesday. Competitions lasted 30 minutes, starting with formation time and the duration of the performance in front of the judges.
Marching band placed third in their division against six other bands, the color guard placed first in their division also competing against six other schools, and street percussion placed third in their division. Elizabeth Guardado (12) placed fourth against other military baton drum majors.
“I believe the band could’ve worked on their marching technique more. We had a few people out of step, phrasing, and out of line. I also think our musicality wasn’t too bad, but it definitely wasn’t our best performance,” said Elizabeth Guardado regarding changes towards the performance.
The color guard captain, Guillermo Lopez (12) said, “My guard members could have had more consistent smiles, their posture could also be improved,” regarding the color guard performance.
Both band and color guard leaders are “incredibly proud” of their members and their hard work. Those who are interested can view it at the following link. https://youtu.be/1FLljsEvhAU?si=2_buwCUoajw7DSaV
The band and color guard will be hosting their Halloween Extravaganza event on October 27 featuring their annual haunted house. Tickets are currently on sale for $10 to purchase from any band or color guard member regarding the event.
