The Tigers varsity football team are now 6-1 after winning their week 8 match up against the Johansen Vikings, which had previously been tied for first in league with the Tigers on October 6, 2023.
When asked about the preparation that was taken going into the week Coach Michael Tate, the Linebacker Coach for the Tigers stated, “Going into the week, I preached to our linebackers that we needed to stay disciplined throughout the game, but seek and destroy on the defensive side of the ball.”
The Vikings were given possession of the football to begin the first half of the game, scoring on their opening drive of the game. The Tigers struck back by scoring with their first possession of the football, through the air from quarterback David Herrera (12) to receiver Caleb Robertson (12) for a 13 yard touchdown reception. After making some adjustments, the Tigers defense didn’t let up any more points within the first half. A field goal from kicker Abel Carrillo (12) gave the Tigers a two point lead going into halftime 10-8.
Going into halftime Herrera stated, “I expected the team to pick up the slack all together on both sides of the ball and hold strong to come out with the win. We were playing well, we just needed to fix the minor mistakes that we can’t have, especially in a big game like that.”
Coming out of halftime, it was a slow start with neither offense scoring any points throughout the entirety of the third quarter. By the end of the second half, the Tigers offense had put up two more touchdowns, while the Tigers defense only let up one more touchdown during that second half with the final score of 23-22.
After the Johansen game, the team took on Ceres the following week with a win of 35-28. The Tigers are now 5-0 in league. The Tigers are in high hopes to continue their undefeated streak for a second year in a row!
