This is the season for giving but LBHS students and staff give all year long. There are several areas on campus where students can get needed items from personal items to clothing.
On campus the wellness counselor and the homeless and foster youth liaison, Mrs. Jazmin Landeros has ways that she is helping not only the homeless students, but all Tigers on campus. There is a student closet drive and she is working with the school administrators to host a food pantry as well for any student or youth that is in need.
Landeros is taking donations from students and staff as well as from the community. If you want to donate and you are a guest, you can go to the main office. If you are a student who wants to donate, then you can either go to the main office or her class in room 47. She is taking new and lightly used clothes, shoes, scarves/gloves and new socks. She also offers sealed and store bought items with hydrogenation products.
Landeros stated that “Individuals who are experiencing a challenging time have many resources for students on campus.”
Also, Landeros is trying to connect with the different clubs to help build the pantry with needed items. Landeros plans to turn part of her classroom into a pantry area since room on campus is limited. The school district also provides food cards and personal supplies for students that need assistance immediately.
There are also other teachers on campus that are helping students in need.
Mrs. Joanna Patino, 9th grade English teacher, in room 510 stated, “In my classroom I have a small pantry with small items students might need. Lotion, hairspray, gel, tampons, pads, panty liners, toothbrushes, and deodorants, etc. However, those are just small items a student might need. The clothes closet is going to be Landeros’ thing. She also reaches out to me if there is a student in need that needs other items, such as jackets, shoes, backpacks. I buy those as needed just to help out.”
Another place on campus to receive help is with Mr. Rod Hill, FFA woodshop teacher. He stated, “Each year we do a coat drive for FFA. Currently the FFA has coats/jackets of all sizes, available for students that need them. They are kept in my room in totes.”
If a student needs a coat, they can come get one from Hill in room 601/604/606.
Landeros heard of other student closets in different districts and thought that it would be good for the students in our community. She wanted to stress that there are some teens that are in this challenging time of their life and are embarrassed about what they are experiencing. They don’t need to be embarrassed and scared to ask for help. There are many people on campus willing to help.
If students are in need of clothes, food, personal products, or someone to talk to, students can go to room 47.
