It’s official! The last three weeks of the semester for LBHS are here. Majority of students are excited for Christmas break and some are stressing out due to their grades. It’s well known to most that a lot of students tend to do their work last second.
Students all around the US make it a challenge known as the “Academic Comeback” which is a trend online where a student has bad grades in their classes and an extreme amount of missing assignments. They tend to do all the work at the very last minute and cause the teachers to grade all their late assignments on their break.
According to Urban Dictionary, academic comeback means “purposely freeloading for the majority of the semester and in the final weeks somehow getting back into the honor roll.”
When Mrs. McCullough, an English teacher was asked about how it is grading assignments so late she said, “I never have to go through that. I give my students four days to complete work. With Pride Time and class time to work, I feel this is plenty of time to do work. If students cannot get work done in that amount of time, then they need to look at their priorities and get busy before the end of grading periods.” This is a smart rule but some teachers aren’t as strict as McCullough which allows students to take advantage and turn things around so late in the semester.
McCullough was asked about why she doesn’t want to grade assignments late. She said, “Grading at the last minute makes me do extra work. I feel that I grade harder because I have specific things that I know that I’m looking for at the time the assignment is due and can make grading adjustments at the time. If I’m grading weeks or months later, I will not be following the same grading measures.”
From a student perspective, they see nothing wrong with it. Students enjoy doing things last second not knowing how it is from a teacher’s side. When an anonymous student was questioned about the ordeal, he stated, “I see nothing wrong with it to be honest. From my point of view a lot of things could be going on like sports, family, ect. and I can’t keep up. I understand it’s hard for teachers but they signed up for it.”
It’s a situation that is pretty much a never ending story for most. Teachers sometimes create deadlines for students to get their work done so they can get it all over with before break. Even with those rules put into place students still wait till the last minute to complete the assignment.
This problem will never be solved. Some students do manage to fall behind throughout the year doing sports or some just worrying about it another day. Once students get older they tend to wake up to time management and getting things done right away but most will stick to their old ways by really prioritizing their work. It will make things way less stressful and feel more relieved.
