A phobia is an anxiety disorder defined by a persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation. Phobias also have different names and many different people may have a phobia but do not know the specific name of it. Common phobias a person may have is Acrophobia which is the fear of heights, Ophidiophobia is the fear of snakes, and Arachnophobia is a fear of spiders and other arachnids.
When LBHS Pawprint interviewed Ms. Barcellos, science, she said, “I am deeply afraid of clowns.” But when also asked do you know what phobia you have she did not know. In this case if you are afraid of clowns, you may have Coulrophobia.
Venezia Morales (12) was also asked about which phobia she has and she said, “I am deeply afraid of the ocean, but I do not know the name of my phobia.” Fear of the ocean is called Thalassophobia.
There are many phobias but also there are very different types of phobias like a “specific phobia” a feeling or fear of a particular person or type of person, place, objects, activity, or situation. Another type is a “panic disorder” this disorder causes unexpected and unpredictable periods of intense anxiety and fear. This is most likely to occur in adolescence or young adulthood. “Agoraphobia” is an intense fear of the outside world and most kids suffer from this feeling that they are more safe at home. Social phobia is very rare; it is also called social anxiety disorder. This occurs in only 1.4 percent of children and adolescents
The main cause of phobias can be caused from traumas, stress and genetics. They are most likely to appear in your childhood and persist into adulthood. Most kids fear animals, blood, and the dark. These fears trigger the “fight or flight” response which in the end creates these phobias.
Most phobias are serious, but there are also phobias that are strange. For example, Arachibutyrophobia is the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. The most ironic phobia is Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia, the fear of big words but yet the name is big itself.
