On January 5-6 Elizabeth Buenrostro (12) and Angelina Borelli (11) competed in Napa at the girls wrestling tournament with over 700 girls competing there as well. A few teammates went as well to watch and cheer them on. Buenrostro wrestled in the 102 weight class and Borelli wrestled in the 112 weight class.
Bunerostro wrestled four times in the first day going 2-2. Buenrostro stated, “I started wrestling because my brother is wrestling and I wanted to show him I’m better.” She prepares herself before matches by listening to “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield.
Borelli wrestled six times and continued onto the second day taking fifth place. Borelli has wrestled since she was younger, but this is her first year wrestling in high school. Borelli stated, “I enjoy wrestling because it’s a sport where I can control the outcome of my matches and not be able to blame other people for a mistake I can fix.”
Both wrestlers are practice partners and help each other through practices and are there for each other during duels and tournaments. Buenrostro said, “My favorite part about practicing with Angelina is she pushes me to work hard and be better.”
Borelli said, “I like that Lizzie knows what she’s doing and she helps a lot when it comes to working on certain moves.”
Overall, both girls feel that the tournament was a great learning experience with a lot of good competition and their teammates enjoyed watching them compete.
