Scholarship Saturday was held on January 27. This was an opportunity for seniors to get information about local scholarships and receive clarification on applications.
Local scholarships are vital to students seeking further education. Though there are plenty more opportunities to receive scholarships elsewhere, local ones are at the tips of more than one students’ fingertips. All steps for filling out scholarships can be found on the Google classroom, LBHS scholarships. Seniors should begin filling them out sooner rather than later, as they are due February 23 by 3 p.m. They are to be turned into Mrs. Souza’s room, 403.
In the Google classroom, students will find a checklist of how to go about filling out their applications. Though it may seem stressful, Mrs. Souza advises students to go to her before it’s too late to ask any questions. One of the biggest takeaways from scholarship Saturday was mass printing transcripts and the necessary documents/outlines needed for each scholarship so it’s easier to stay organized while also completing them effectively.
Each scholarship varies in the amount of aid given to a student. Recipients of the scholarships are viewed from many different viewpoints. Students will find that most scholarships ask for a personal statement. Usually, a personal statement entails writing what the planned major or career is, why the scholarship would help them, and school or community involvement. After these factors are taken into consideration by the judges, students will attend an award ceremony on May 15 in the MPB which is where they find out if they have won the scholarship.
Senior Jianna Bretz, attendee of Scholarship Saturday said, “I thought the first semester of senior year was difficult, then second semester hit, and I’ve realized all the work I still have to do with the scholarships.”
Fortunately, scholarship Saturday was not the only chance seniors have to get help with applications. Mrs. Souza, director of the scholarships, will be hosting weekly workshops at Pride Time in her room (403). These are the following days seniors can sign-up for Pride Time: Friday, February 9, Friday, February 16, and Friday, February 23.
