Over the last week during February 5 to February 9, Black Student Union (BSU) sponsored our school dress up days and guest speakers for Black History Month.
The club chose to accentuate important aspects in their culture and inspire students that they can be successful graduating from high school. The speakers encouraged students to be award that they do not need to come from somewhere big to great things.
On February 9, Joshua Smith spoke to the club and students about Black History Month. He talked about his upbringing as well as his childhood. He also made claims towards what led him to his various career choices and how to function as an African American. Dealing with fractal discrimination, he provided the club with uplifting advice.
Mr. Smith feels that as an African American, it is an opportunity to reflect what black people have done in our country throughout history. Black History Month should be important to everyone because it highlights the untold part of history. Black History is American history. Mr. Smith said, “I think that in order to understand that it is important to highlight what other people have done for our country besides what is in our textbooks.”
Another speaker scheduled on February 16 is Dominic Wills will be talking this week. She is a graduate from Pacheco High School and now is an entrepreneur in the local community. Mr. Griggs, from the Restorative Justice Program is also speaking to the club.
