Boys tennis has kicked off their 2023-2024 season.
Coming into the season, the Tigers have many new and returning players looking forward to improving and developing their game. This year, the team has a record high of 27 players on the team. At every practice, the players need to play challenge matches in order to rank up and get into the top 16. Only the top 16 players travel with the team and compete in matches against other schools.
Last year, the Tigers took third place in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and snuck into the playoffs. They played Mira Loma which they ended up losing to. The Tigers hope to bounce back and make it further in the playoffs this year.
Nick Tova (11) shared his thoughts for the season. “I believe we are a better team this year and with hard work and determination, we will definitely have a shot at making it far into the playoffs.”
Practices are every day besides match days. This year, only six out of eight teams from the WAC league have teams. The schools who do not have teams this year are Pacheco and Ceres. Students get excused from class at 12:00 P.M. for away games and at 1:10 P.M. for home games.
The most challenging team to face this year will definitely be Mountain House High School. They have an excellent tennis program and have been very successful for years. The Tigers look to compete with the Mustangs this year and hopefully beat them. Last year, the Mustangs swept them in the season with both wins being a score of 8-1.
So far this season, the Tigers have a record of 1-1. They lost an exhibition match to El Capitan with a score of 3-6, and won their first league game against Grace Davis with a score of 9-0.
The next match will be Monday, March 11, 2024 at 3:00 P.M. against Johansen High School.
