Spring break is a time for fun, new ventures, and much needed relaxation. It’s the last week of March and occurs in many different places depending on the adventurer.
While under the impression that people would want to go far for Spring break, we were proven wrong after conducting interviews. After talking to people on campus, it was discovered the most common response to “What are you planning to do over Spring break?” was simply, “Catching up on sleep.”
Also, many Tiger students still have sporting events over break. Just because academics get put on hold, it doesn’t mean sports do too. There will still be swim, tennis, baseball, men’s golf, and men’s volleyball with practices and games continuing.
Although many students are busy during spring, there’s an unlimited amount of things to do for fun when sports are not going on. One example is making a homemade slip-n-slide. To do this, you can get a tarp, put it on a flat or slope-like surface in a backyard or at a park, utilize a hose or buckets of water, and put soap on the tarp for the ultimate slide. This idea is cost efficient and easily creates a homemade water park. Another idea for spring break is going on a hike. The great thing about Los Banos is we are near Dinosaur Point which offers a great hiking/biking trail for one to enjoy by themselves or with company.
If you don’t lean towards outdoors events as listed above, you can visit Los Banos’ new Pool & Billiards room downtown. This way, you don’t have to be in the sun. Plus, the Billiard offers food and drinks to accompany playing pool. On the topic of drinks, one can try out the town’s newest Tea shop called “Soya Tea Lounge” located on West Pacheco Blvd. The shop recently opened and has a cool party vibe in the evening with laser light shows on the walls and smoke machines. Lastly, one can achieve a homely vibe by making a bonfire in the backyard with friends or family. Bonfires are great for colder nights and making smores.
A good idea is also finding a new hobby for yourself. Due to the good weather in spring, many more things become more enjoyable. For example, fishing at ponds near Los Banos. There are countless YouTube videos teaching viewers how to fish which makes the process of learning even easier. Another hobby to pick up is pickleball. Pickleball has become increasingly popular and is a sport that is overlooked yet very fun with friends. Pickleball courts at the Racquet Club are available to the public for free with a membership and a day fee without one. Another overlooked sport is Spikeball which is easy to transport to places with friends. The great thing about Spikeball is it can be played on sand or cement.
Oftentimes, it is difficult to find things to do in a small town. However, fun is in the hands of the beholder, not their surroundings. Clearly, there are many things one can do that are affordable and within a small distance of home.
