Book lovers and fashion virtuosos alike, look no further than Creations By Daiz! A crocheting business run by Daisy Delgado (12), Creations by Daiz offers a variety of designs in charming book covers and even makes adorable cat-ear-shaped beanies.
Delgado started to crochet in 2022 and took her hobby to the next level by beginning her business in February of 2023. However, her love for crocheting goes way back when her grandma introduced her to the art of crocheting in her early childhood. “When I was younger, I would see my grandma crochet scarfs and tortilla warmers (known as Costuras) and she would introduce the hobby to me,” said Delgado. “Over time I lost motivation to continue but in my sophomore year of high school, I rediscovered my passion and made beanies then later on book sleeves.”
Along with the previous inspiration growing up with her grandmother’s mentorship, she also gained the motivation to begin crocheting from social media.”As we know on social media different forms of art are displayed and crocheting happens to be one of them. Seeing the unique ways people express themselves is an element I enjoy appreciating whether it’s in colors or patterns. I’m always able to convey my emotions through crafts; it’s something I value in my business.”
Running Creations By Daiz comes with its ups and downs. Delgado personally enjoys making book covers the most, mainly due to the positive reactions from her customers. “The main product so far in my business is my book covers… I love seeing people utilizing them! I am happy people can use my covers as a cushion for their possessions. I always have to have a book with me so I am glad people can also take their current book with them wherever they go.”
However, Delgado also faces obstacles when it comes to sizing the stitches of her products, “Sizing is something I need much more practice with. Sometimes I make my stitches too tight causing my design to decrease in form. I hope in the future I can work better with measurements.”
Creations by Daiz has a bright future ahead, especially with the ever-growing rise in the trend of reading and buying books. And who wouldn’t love a cute cat beanie to wear while enjoying a good book? She is excited about the future of her business and is confidently looking forward to offering new products, such as clothing, down the line. “Something I’m eager about is learning how to make more clothing pieces. Last summer I crocheted a pullover sweater and I was obsessed. I know with patience and commitment I can create more tops.”
Delgado offered a motivational sentiment for students aspiring to begin their own businesses, “Exploit your passion. Don’t take your creativity for granted and share it with the world. Besides, you only live once and might as well do hobbies you have enthusiasm for.”
