Art Club took a fun field trip on March 12. We went to the San Francisco Modern Museum of Arts. This was an amazing experience to see all of the different art works, different cultures and different ways of art that was shown. When you first walk into the museum, on the first floor, “WU Tsang:Of Whales” is shown on the video screen.
When we first arrived at the museum we had tour guides show us different works and they provide different history about the art works. The tour guide I had showed us an Artwork called,
“Femme au chapeau (Woman with a Hat)” created by Henri Matisse. This was an interesting piece to see because the tour guide explained that during the 1905, portraits of women didn’t look like this. The other pieces of art created during the time had neutral colors compared to this portrait which was brighter colors which caused people to question it. After the tours we had time to go and explore the museum for ourselves. This was so interesting to see all of the different ways people think and how different people can express themselves through art.
One interesting display was an amazing bridge which is called, “One-way color tunnel.” The bridge was beautiful with all of the different colors. When you walked through the tunnel and looked up, it was different shades of pink and blues. The medium used to create this effect was color effect acrylic and this artwork was created by Olafur Eliasson.
If I had to name a favorite artwork, I would choose a piece by Ellsworth Kelly, called “Spectrum 1, 1953.” This piece is just a different color from green to golden orange with yellow on the end and the medium is oil on canvas. It just makes you think and makes you feel different things. For me this artwork makes me feel happy. I don’t know if it is because of the different colors or how they are arranged, but this artwork causes happiness for me, but this is not the cause for everyone. People can feel different things when looking at various artworks.
I am so glad that I was able to go on this field trip because it helped me really appreciate different artwork. Not everyone’s work has a special meaning; you can look at someone’s work and feel or find something that is not what everyone else sees. We are not the same person and art helps to ensure how we feel. Art can make us happy or sad; it just depends on how you look at the work.
I want to say thank you to Mrs. Sarah Sagouspe for planning this trip and being the art club advisor.
