With college approaching, seniors have the opportunity to hear about colleges from college representatives throughout the spring semester. On April 4, 2024 Selina Hernandez presented slides during Pride Time about Stanislaus State in hopes to encourage students to attend this college.
She shared Stanislaus State was established in 1957. They have about 10,000 active students. They have two campuses; the main campus is Turlock, CA and the other campus is in Stockton, CA. Stan State has a large population of first-generation students attending and offer students 45 undergraduate majors and 44 undergraduate minors within four academic colleges: College of Business Administration, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Education, Kinesiology and Social Work, and College of Science.
They are not an impacted campus and the majority of their majors are not impacted, aside from Nursing being the most impacted major. This allows students a chance to be accepted if they choose to remain closer to home.
There are over 50 organizations and clubs that include fraternities and sororities. Their spirit days are on Wednesdays in which they refer to as Warrior Wednesday, which is a weekly tradition on campus.
Stanislaus State is big in sports. This campus is a division II for women’s Basketball, Cross Country, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Track and Field and Volleyball, and men’s Basketball, Baseball, Cross Country, Golf, Track and Field, and Soccer.
They offer campus housing that is apartment style living. There are different places to eat on campus such as: Starbucks, The Market (like a 7/11), Warrior Grill (American style food), Red Wave (sushi and poke bowl), and Main Dining (all you can eat)
They offer career assistance to our students to prepare them for their interviews as well as conducting job fairs. seniors who are considering this college can be close to home while attending. Some advantages of having college near home would be saving money, especially on gas. Students will also have family near by when needed. In addition, they offer academic and student support like free tutoring, advising, and warrior pantry. counseling services, student health center and undocumented student services.
Students can find more information here on this link if they have any more questions. They are a proud of the national recognition. Here is a list of the different points of pride: https://www.csustan.edu/about-stan-state/points-pride
Selina Hernandez was born and raised in Modesto, CA. Her family was low-income, and lived in the countryside of Modesto. She had support from her parents for me to pursue a higher education to have a better future. With the help of her high school’s College Counselor, she received assistance with submitting her application to Stanislaus State. She is a first-generation college student and participated in EOP that provided extra assistance with navigating college, such as registering for classes, ensuring that students are on track to graduate and assisting her with knowing what resources are available to them. Miss Hernandez originally wanted to be a high school math teacher as she loved math and education. However, she had changed her major to Criminal Justice sophomore year of college as she wanted to focus on helping at-risk youth in the community in providing them resources and guidance. After she had graduated with her BA in Criminal Justice, she focused on pursuing a master’s degree in counseling education. She applied right after she graduated with her BA and did not get accepted the first time. She had reached out to the counseling education department and requested feedback so she can better understand how to improve her chances of being accepted for the next application period. She reapplied the following year and got accepted. She completed the program in one year and it was a very proud moment in her life. She got her first higher education role shortly after graduating and worked at a private nursing school. She knew that she wanted to find her way back to Stanislaus State as not only as a proud alum, but wanted to help the next generation of college students recognize their potential and see that Stanislaus State is a special place where the staff and faculty are here to provide an excellent education, guidance and resources to our students for them to achieve their goals.
