The league finals for boys tennis singles took place on April 22, 2024 at Mountain House High School. The finals featured a variety of players from every school in the WAC league.
The finals consisted of every team’s top three singles players who were then randomly paired with a different player from another school. The three players from the Tigers were Justin Gould (11), Nick Tova (11), and Chase Fifield (10). These Tiger’s players gave it their all on the court and all had a great season. Fortunately for the Tigers, they will have their top three all returning next year.
In their first matches, Gould faced off against Johansen’s number 2 singles player, Isel Navarro, and won the match in two sets 6-2 and 6-4. Tova faced off against Johansen’s number 1 singles player, Julian Mendoza, and won the game in three sets 6-2, 6-7, and 6-4. Fifield faced off against Beyer’s number 1 singles player, Matthew Davis, and lost 6-3 and 6-2. Although Fifield did not come up victorious, he still gave it his all on the court and battled the entire time.
In their second matches, Gould and Tova unfortunately both lost. Gould lost to Mountain House’s number 2 singles player and foreign exchange student, Xavi Gimeno. Gould lost both sets 6-0. Tova faced off against the league MVP from Mountain House, Eidan Mercado. He ended up losing both sets 6-0. When asked about his thoughts about the matches, Gould said, “We ended up losing, but we will definitely come back stronger next year and I can see either one of us making it all the way next year.”
Both Mercado and Gimeno ended up making it all the way to the championship. Mercado has won the tournament for two years straight and was looking to make it three.
The championship match was held on Wednesday, April 24. Mercado and Gimeno both played a great game but Gimeno’s game was unmatched for Mercado’s strong play which is the reason why he has been the league’s MVP for the third year in a row. Mercado won the match in two sets 6-0 and 6-1.
