On April 19 and April 20, the boys and girls swim team had their WAC championships. The championships was the last meet of the season for everyone not moving onto sections. The boys 200 medley and 200 free relay, Philip Vanderpool swimming 50 free, James Savage swimming 500 free and 200 free and Samantha Pantoja swimming 100 fly and 100 backstroke will all be moving onto sections. For the athletes who made it, they will continue to practice and prepare for sections on May 1, 2 and 3.
Sophomore Sam Pantoja has been swimming since she was six years old when she started on the Los Banos Tiger Sharks swim team. Her biggest goal in swimming is to get a scholarship to a college where she will be able to continue to compete in swimming.
Pantoja stated, “My favorite part about swimming is being able to accomplish growth when knowing all the hard work I put in is paid off.” She loves having the support of her teammates and parents and sister and is excited to compete in sections.
Senior James Savage is one of the swimmers who qualified for sections. Savage is an amazing swimmer who has accomplished many things and is known for swimming the Alcatraz and back. Savage first started swimming for a club team when he was six years old. His biggest goal in swimming is to just improve so he can be better in water polo and practices hard every single day to better himself.
Savage stated, “My favorite thing about swimming is being social and meeting all sorts of different people.” He plans on preparing himself for sections by focusing on a fast pass and showing up for practice everyday even on the days he doesn’t feel like it.
The divisionals date has not been determined at this time.
