I am graduating high school in a short few weeks. I’ve decided to go to community college instead of a university. Community college is a great decision for me because I want to attend college, but I am unsure of which four year college is best for me at this time.
Another reason why I chose to go to a community college rather than a four-year college was because my family thought it was a better decision. My cousins that are currently in college told me that it would be better if I stayed at a community college for two years and then transferred out.
I took cost as a factor to my decision too. Community college offers an affordable education. It is a lot cheaper than attending a four year, so I can study without spending too much or going into a lot of debt. This is also really important because I’m not entirely sure what I want to do in these two years.
Another advantage of community college is the smaller class sizes. Community college has smaller classes, so it’s easier to get help from teachers and make friends.
Also, community colleges often have more flexible scheduling options, which helps a lot because if I plan on having a job, it is easy to handle both.
The community college I chose was Clovis Community. There are many different community colleges students can choose from such as Merced Junior College, Modesto Junior College, and Madera Community College. Clovis Community offers six academic pathways: Business Industry and Information Technology, Creative Arts Language and Literature, Early Childhood and Education, Health Career and Sport Science, Social and Behavioral Science, and STEM and Computer Science. I want to study the Health Career pathway.
Clovis Community also offers over 25 Associate Degrees for Transfer Programs to CSU and UC campuses at a fraction of the tuition prices. This is one main reason why I chose this community college. My aunt also recommended this college because she attended this one and then transferred out to a UC.
After attending these two years in a community college, I would like to attend a four year college at a UC continuing my education.
