Pinterest, pin-your-interest, is a social media platform serving as a virtual bulletin board where one can save and discover ideas for various interests.
In my opinion, it’s not only a way to discover ideas for events and daily life, but it’s a way to creatively explore your own mind. On Pinterest, you can easily put your ideas to life with just a simple search bar. It allows for limitless inspiration. D.I.Y. crafts, fashion inspiration, home decor, and much more can be easily saved to a “board.” As someone who is not artistically inclined, I find Pinterest to be a creative outlet without feeling the pressure of messing up.
Depending on your feed, it can almost end up feeling like a virtual art museum. Users can scroll and admire special photographs people upload, or even upload your own.
Like many internet sources, Pinterest has helped me curate ideas for events and make life easier. I have hosted multiple events which have been “sponsored” by Pinterest due to my own findings. In fact, with graduation season approaching, I have found myself on the app more than usual. On top of the graduation party and dorm decoration inspiration, Pinterest has pre-made checklists of college essentials which makes the shopping less stressful and more productive. Dorm essentials are not the only checklists Pinterest has. There are countless amounts of checklists that can be beneficial to other topics and can be found in a simple search. I find checklists to be one of the apps best ideas as it saves time for yourself.
Pinterest differs from other social media platforms because there is little to none social interaction. For this reason, I find the app to be less harmful. The community is not flooded with hate and there is less of a chance for creators to feel bad about the content they produce. Rather than feeling like you have to conform to trends and ideas produced by other people, you can have more of a personal experience on the app and discover ideas at your own pace. Plus, you have the option to leave boards private if you aren’t interested in other people looking at yours.
To say the least, Pinterest is a creative outlet which provides endless opportunities to curate your own collections and get inspired by others. It is a unique space where you can creatively connect with yourself, rather than others.
