In an effort to increase students’ safety, Los Banos High School installed Evolv metal detectors at the front and back entrances, making this the first time the district has implemented such a measure. The district level and the school board have made this decision on behalf of students’ safety.
Metal detectors have become a crucial part schools across the nation in hopes to keep students safer. “The number one responsibility of any school is safety first,” said Mrs. Pamela Snively, learning director. The school hasn’t lost the trust of the students; the administration simply just wants to prioritize the safety of the students.
Students walk through the detectors with their belongings and if the metal detector beeps, security will see a 3D image pinpointing the object in question. Evolv metal detectors are powered by Express AI which instantly identifies any threats from personal items including keys, coins, belts, and cell phones. If a student is found carrying something in question, an administrator will escort him/her to the office.
Joanna Monobe (12), initially found them inconvenient, but as the lines shortened, she got used to them. “They seemed unnecessary, but when the lines shortened, they became fine.”
According to the website, Evolv Technology, it says, “It’s the fastest weapons-screening product on the market, screening 60 people every minute, 10x faster than transitional walk-through metal detectors.”
