Wrestling is a great sport that everyone should do. Wrestling will transform you for the better and make you the best version of yourself.
Wrestling starts at the beginning of December 1. Conditioning is happening now. If you’re interested or not sure you want to go, conditioning is Tuesday through Thursday at 4:30 to 6:30 behind the Tigers Gym. Wrestling is a great way to relieve stress and pent up energy. Wrestlers are taught how to defend themselves against any foe. Wrestlers have nothing to lose, but everything to gain. Wrestling will be coached by Larry Borelli, Eddie Madriz, Josh Cortez and multiple others. Wrestling is a great sport to join based on the people and environment they get to work with.
A usual practice will start after school at 4:15 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. To begin practice the team will warm up first by stretching as they jog through the hot warm atmosphere. After jogging around the room four times, they line up into groups of four and do two sets of cartwheels going forward and back on both sides for optimal performance, including a series of other motions such as shots and more. Then the team spreads out and practices their stance of motion and takedowns by themselves. When everyone is done with their 10 minute stance of motion, they get paired with a partner to go over takedowns, shots, pins, and most importantly how to win. Before finishing practice, the coaches will go over what was done right at practice and what the team has to improve on.
Wrestling has improved so many student lives in general. Former wrestler, Zander Gonzalez (11) stated, “It’s just a great sport; it gives you a lot of discipline and shows you can honestly do anything you put your mind to.”
The environment that wrestling gives athletes is a great way to escape from personal problems you may have at home in a healthy way and keep away from drugs.
Gonzalez also stated, “Everybody is very uplifting in the room if you’re going through something and they’ll ask you but if you don’t want to talk about that’s fine you can still get it out.”
Brokton Borelli (12), a three year veteran wrestler earned a D1 scholarship to go wrestle for University of Maryland college. Borelli strongly believes that without wrestling he wouldn’t be given the opportunity to be able to go to college for free.
Everyone can do wrestling no matter how big or how small. “We have 100 pound weight class all the way up to 280 pound weight class anybody can do wrestling there’s not one body type you need to be a wrestler,” Borelli commented.
Michael Coelho (10), a wrestling veteran stated, “If you do wrestling and have the perseverance, you can do anything else in life.”
No matter the obstacle, wrestling teaches people anything is possible. As a wrestler begins to wrestle, they begin to realize how strong they really are mentally and physically. It’ll break down the wrestler and remold them like a pot of clay until they’re nothing more than just a piece of stunning work. The confidence would be uncanny if you join.
