Some of the most fascinating people around us are teachers. One of these teachers is Mr. Allen Lee Spivey.
He’s taught numerous different classes across the LBHS Math department. This year he’s teaching Data Science, Integrated 1, and Math 1-2 advanced. In prior years, he’s taught Integrated 2 as well. Out of all classes, his favorite to teach is Data Science.
Mr. Spivey has been teaching at LBHS for 9 years. Along with teaching he works with YouCubed on starting the Data Science curriculum. Not only that, Spivey is the head of the Math department.
Spivey actually never imagined himself teaching. In fact he was working in retail. He’s always found himself teaching though. This was so evident that when he started pursuing teaching; people in his life weren’t even surprised and even said they expected it.
When asked about his favorite thing about teaching, Spivey answered, “A-ha moments.” He enjoys watching as students finally understand a concept. A challenge of teaching for Mr. Spivey is students who’ve let themselves believe they can’t do math. “I think they just haven’t had the right person to teach them,” Spivey said.
Outside of work, Spivey spends his time with his wife and daughter. He and his wife have been together for 35 years and his daughter is in college. Spivey loves animals and has pets of his own. He has a big dog that’s a Great Pyrenees mix who weighs 116 pounds. He also has a ball python snake that is his daughter’s.
Traveling is also a really big interest to Spivey. Traveling to Europe and other parts of the world is something on his bucket list. In addition, getting a PHD in Statistical Analysis is also something he may like to achieve.
Something Spivey believes is that people can change. “Who I am is not who I’ve been,” he stated.
Mr. Spivey is a positive role model for students and a huge help here on campus.
