Girls Flag Football is rapidly gaining traction across the nation. As more high school programs adopt this exciting sport, more girls are eager to compete. This is LBHS second year having a Flag Football team.
The girls season has had a challenging start, but they are determined to improve and overcome these early setbacks. Despite the rough beginning, the team is showing resilience and a strong work ethic in their practices. Siena Freitas, (10) plays both offensive and defensive for the Tigers and she said, “I prefer playing offense because I like catching the ball and scoring touchdowns. The feeling of scoring a touchdown is the best feeling because you help the team out in so many ways and it’s just amazing.” Freitas said that her favorite part of Flag Football is spending time with my friends and having a good time.
Devanie Vargas, (11) is co-captain alongside Siena Freitas and has been a very important asset to the team. Vargas also plays both offensive and defense and says the reason why she decided to join Flag Football was because “I wanted to try something new and exciting, I’ve always liked Football and when the opportunity to play came to me, I took the chance.”
Vargas has played both years that Girls flag football has been offered to Los Banos High School and said that the most challenging part of the sport is that “the sport is still so new and that we still have a lot to learn.”
Mikayla Mendoza (12) is the quarterback for the team. One of Mendoza’s biggest struggles as a quarterback is “finding receivers who are open and targeting them on the move.” Mendoza said that she stays motivated on the field by “staying calm, cool, and collected for my team.” Mendoza likes to play flag football. She said, “I enjoy the competition and hanging out with my teammates.”
Ava Felix, (12) has played both years and loves the game. Felix said she tried out for flag football because “I’ve always wanted the opportunity to play football when I was younger.” Felix plays both offensive and defensive and starts for both as well. Her favorite part about playing the sport is “being able to pull flags and cover my opponents.”
The next flag football game is on September 19. Junior Varsity plays at 6:00 and Varsity at 7:00.
