Los Banos High School is opening the doors to their Home EC Club promising to teach students who decide to join skills such as cooking, baking, crocheting and sewing. President of the club, Hailey Jane Tangco (12) tells what’s cookin’.
Home EC clubs aren’t uncommon in high schools, however, running a club isn’t an easy feat, so why did Tangco decide to run Home EC? “I wanted other people to know how to cook and clean and the basic necessities of living. I learned that no one that I knew knows how to cook even an egg, so I wanted to help people learn those basic skills.”
When asked what activities Home EC has to offer to students, Tangco responded, “As of right now cooking, baking, cleaning, independent living, crocheting, and sewing. Our next meeting we actually have an activity ready where members are going to make a basic batter of cookie dough, and members are going to decide what they bring for the cookies and they’ll also get to take the cookies they make home.”
At the end of the day, many clubs seek to provide skills to interested students that they will take with them into adulthood. Home EC offers skills for the future. Tangco said, “By teaching them (club members) basic necessities like being able to live independently and budget, I feel like that affects members lives.”
She said, “We have a lot of fun activities planned this year. I hope those who are interested decide to join!”
Overall, there is so much to look forward to in the Home EC Club and the club has only just begun. Meetings are held in Room 11 and 12 on Wednesdays after school. The next Home EC meeting will be held October 20.
