The book Divergent by Veronica Roth and published in 2011, is the first book of the trilogy and it is about a girl named Tris Prior who lives in a futuristic dystopian world. In this world, their society is divided into five factions and once each person turns 16, they must decide which faction they would like to stay in for the rest of their lives.
Tris chooses dauntless over the four other options, Amity(The kind), Erudite (the intelligent), Abnegation (the selfless), and Candor (the honest). Dauntless are individuals who pursue bravery over all else. During initiation, Tris finds out that she is Divergent, which means that she cannot fit into one faction like the others. Being Divergent is very dangerous in their society, so she was forced to conceal this information about herself.
Being in Dauntless, Tris has to show her bravery by going through three different stages, each with difficult obstacles against all of the other initiates to make it on the board. If someone does not pass these tests, they will become factionless. Tris makes many friends in her faction and meets one of the leaders, Tobias (Four) who is Tris’ love interest.
My overall favorite part of the book is how Tris grows stronger as the book progresses. When she first enters Dauntless, she is scared and unconfident, but as she learns more and more, she makes her way up to the first person on the board.
I suggest this book to anyone who enjoys reading about dystopian worlds, some violence, and a little bit of romance. The book kept me wanting to read and I never wanted to put it down, the plot kept me on the edge of my seat. This book is not very difficult to read and it is written beautifully.
