Seniors turned in yearbook senior quotes on November 8 to appear with their senior portrait.
Yearbook quotes have been a tradition for many many years. The first quotes can be found all the way back to the late 19th century. Senior quotes gained more importance by the 50’s. The quotes were used in a way for a student to express their personality and philosophies. As this long established custom went on students started to incorporate pop culture aspects in their quotes.
“We have always included this time honored tradition for our seniors,” said Mrs. Kimberly McCullough, yearbook advisor.
Seniors have two choices to provide and then quotes are reviewed by administrators and McCullough before being added to the yearbook pages.
“Often, some quotes are not appropriate, leaving our yearbook staff to move to choice two or no choice at all. So it is important for students to chose wisely and remember these quotes are a reflection of them and will be there forever in the 2025 yearbook, under their picture. It is a big thing,” said McCullough.
Senior quotes continue to evolve even in the modern day. Modern aspects such as social media now make a big impact on students. Frequently students used quotes from TV shows, public figures, and video games.
The best way to pick a quote is thinking about all the things in your life that make you, you. Think about something that shaped your life, or a saying you live by. Some choose bible verses that have significance to them. Another good quote idea is a song lyric. Music has so many different ways to express yourself, which is what yearbook quotes are all about.
Senior quotes don’t always have to be inspirational though. Many seniors choose to put a joke or funny saying as a quote. Offering a snapshot into the graduating classes humor can be interesting to look back at in future years.
Examples of quotes used last year include, “Give peace a chance, let the fear you have fall away.” Lana Del Rey. Another is, “LA, I’m a dreamer, who am I to dream?”. A funny one is, “Britney survived 2007, you can survive today.”
Quotes not accepted often have abbreviations, reference the school in a bad way, or have inappropriate content.
Senior quotes are a valued yearbook tradition and perfectly highlight the graduating class’s personality. The quotes are documented forever under the portrait.
