The Girls Wrestling team is kicking off with a promising season. With three wins and four losses so far, the team has shown great potential and resilience.
As they continue to train and refine their strategies, there’s every reason to believe they will do great this season. The mix of experience from the wins and lessons from the losses will only make them stronger.
Mikayla Mendoza (12) has been on the Varsity Girls Wrestling team all four years of her high school career. As a Senior, Mendoza has had a lot of memories and a lot of experiences over the years. Mendoza said “My favorite thing about wrestling is the challenge that it gives you and all of the friendships I’ve made.”
Mendoza discovered her love for wrestling at a young age and said that, “What inspired me to do wrestling was that I grew up around it coming from a family who wrestled all their lives. My Dad, sister, and both of my brothers all did wrestling.
Mendoza said, “As a senior I’m going to miss all of my friends that I’ve made along the way.” Mendoza also said that “ Wrestling has impacted me on the mat by teaching me simple principles about sports that relate to the real world and that off the mat things aren’t going to be any easier.”
Mendoza’s advice she would give to someone new to wrestling would be, “I would say stick with it and it will get better and the feeling when you finish a match is something you’ve never felt before.”
Ava Felix (12) has also done wrestling all four years of her High School career. Felix said, “My favorite thing about wrestling is that it’s hard, not everyone can do it, so it’s more rewarding knowing that I can go through that everyday.”
Felix said, “I’m going miss the team the most. Everyone is so close and the bond we’ve made is like no other.” Felix had also been introduced to wrestling at a young age. Felix said, “My brothers inspired me to start wrestling, they both went to state and it truly inspired me to do what they did.”
Felix has been to many tournaments and has made a lot of memories, she said, “The most memorable moment I’ve made from wrestling is getting first place at a tournament for the first time. I won’t ever forget the feeling of winning.”
Felix said, “Wrestling has impacted me both on and off the mat because it has taught me to never give up no matter how hard things get.” Felix’s advice for someone new to wrestling is “My advice is that, there are gonna be really hard days where you feel like giving up but you’ve got to remember that you can do it if you push through.”
The next wrestling match is on December 27 against Brentwood. Make sure to go show your support.
