As many know, the cozy and festive energy during December is expressed throughout decorations, lights and home activities, but one thing that is always a constant throughout this season is music!
In stores you will hear Christmas music, in parks, and even inside of a person’s earbuds there’s a chance a Christmas carol is playing. So one might wonder, which Christmas song IS THE Christmas song? In order to discover this, the students were given a survey on three songs that is their favorite Christmas song and out of 110 responses the answer is clear.
At the bottom of the three is Ariana Grande’s hit, “Santa Tell Me.” Released in November of 2018 this song has one billion plays. It has even made number ten on Billboard and is so popular in the UK it is the eighth most played Christmas song. In the U.S “Santa Tell Me” is the third most played Christmas song. Although “Santa Tell Me” is a beloved song among those outside of Tigers, it is not that popular within the school with only 16.4% on the survey, landing in last place.
In second place surprisingly is Mariah Carrey’s, “All I want for Christmas is you.” Mariah Carrey, known to rule Christmas, had released this song in October of 1994. It is one of the most popular Christmas songs with over two billion streams being the most played Christmas song out of every single one. This song has been consistent with being on Billboard topping the number one place five different times and spending fifteen weeks on number one. NPR states that “This makes it the first song in history to have four separate runs at No. 1 on the chart.” Despite its popularity it only ended up with 28.2% among the students with the majority deciding that number one statistics isn’t exactly number one in their hearts.
The winner of this Christmas race is “Last Christmas” by WHAM! The music artists behind this song are George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley released this Christmas hit in October of 2009. This song has over one billion streams and has hit Billboard multiple times and reached number three on the list. This song had proved to be the crowned winner among the students having the highest number of votes with 55.5% scooping up the majority, making “Last Christmas” the Los Banos High School’s top Christmas song.
Although “Last Christmas” is the most popular, it doesn’t make the other songs less important as every Christmas song holds a special place in this cold month. Each song brings a cozy and warm feeling to everyone and without every song Christmas wouldn’t be the same fun holiday as we know it.
Have a wonderful holiday season and don’t forget to play “Last Christmas” as the 25th speeds along!
