As league started for Girls Varsity Basketball on January 14, 2025, they have had a rough start. With better competition in the CCC, it has pushed them to compete even more than when being in the WAC the previous years.
Since the league started, the Girls Varsity Basketball team is 2-2 with having lost to Atwater and Merced. Facing some of the toughest teams in the beginning of the season seemed to have its toll on the Lady Tigers. Not being familiar with their playing style gave the other teams an advantage over the Tigers, yet they still were competitive with them.
Coach Lorinda Sanchez said, “This year the CCC is much different in the sense that the teams we’re playing are much more physical than they were in the WAC…they weren’t as physical or big and now it’s a huge difference.”
Their first win of the season came against Golden Valley with the final score being 51-43. This win was much needed and the ladies showed their talents on the floor that night. Their latest game was against Buhach Colony, and once again they won. The final score was 60-20 and the ladies really showed what they were able to do that night. Next up is El Captain, which will prove more of a challenge.
As the second half of the season is coming soon, Coach Sanchez has made the proper adjustments so that the team has a better chance of winning games. One of those adjustments is making more free throws as the ladies get to the line many times in their games. If they capitalize on those free throws, some of those losses may turn into wins.
The Lady Tigers will have to use their knowledge of the game and their speed to propel themselves to more victories throughout the rest of the season. The end goal is the same for every team, and that is to be able to extend their season and play in the playoffs.
They play El Capitan/Merced on January 28 and Atwater on January 30, a home game.
