When it comes to buying a house in California, the state usually has 4 types of regions that people may be able to purchase a home in. These 4 regions are: Mountain, Valley, Coastal, and Desert. Each region has its own quirks, architecture, landmass, flora, fauna, and design, each can be unique in their own way. Everyone has their own opinion on what they want and where they want to live.
For example: Some people might like the wooden cabin feel, so they might want to live up more in the mountains, while other people like more of the beach aesthetic and want to live near the coast. The normal suburban lifestyle might be good for the valley, or if somebody wants solitude, the desert is probably the best option.
Coastal California, also known as the California coastline or the Golden Coast, refers to the coastal regions of the state. The area includes the North Coast, San Francisco Bay Area, Central Coast, and South Coast. Unfortunately, the area is being slowly eroded due to natural processes, being accelerated by climate change. The climate in coastal California is influenced by east-west distances to the dominant cold California Current as well as microclimates. Point Conception tends to divide the Coastal region by mid-summer into warmer (south and east) and cooler (north) zones. Counties usually found in this region are
South Coast

The coast is celebrated for its spectacular scenery, temperate climate, and unrivaled recreational opportunities. It provides unique homes for marine plants, animals, and insects. It’s always an amazing option for a nice vacation to unwind and relax under the warm sun. Although if one wants to live by the coast, the price of homes will be significantly higher than the other regions due to the desirability and demand of them.
From the warm and wet Coastal Region to the hot and dry Desert Region. Usually located in Southern California, the California Deserts or the Deserts of California is where some can find the three main deserts of California
The Mojave Desert
The Colorado Desert
The Great Basin Desert
There are a variety of towns in the desert. Listed below are
Lancaster
Palmdale
Palm Springs
La Quinta
Barstow
Palm Desert
Needles
The desert region of California is characterized by low rainfall, caused by the rain shadow of mountain ranges to the west of the desert region. According to Wikipedia, The Mojave Desert receives 3-10 inches of rain per year. The Colorado Desert receives 2-6 inches of rainfall. The driest spot in California is Death Valley, which averages 1.5 inches of precipitation per year. The soil of California deserts also tend to be alkaline, adding to the stress of drought on plants. People can still find unique flora and fauna in the deserts. They can visit the Joshua Tree National Parks and Mojave National Preserve, finding beautiful landscapes, animals, and plants. Badwater Basin is the lowest point in the United States and lies within Death Valley itself. Depending on the town, the price of housing will be more expensive than a different one. Palm Springs for example is more expensive than Palm Desert.
Leaving the South of California up to the chilly and more moist area up in Northern California is where one can find the opposite of the desert, the high up and massive Mountain Region of California. Taking up half of California, it has two major mountain ranges, the Cascade Range and the Sierra Nevada Range. The coastal side of the mountain region is moist, cool, and foggy. Not all mountain ranges are northern though. Some lie in the south, in the middle, everywhere throughout California. There are a plethora of mountain ranges in California. Some such as
Amargosa Range
Berkeley Hills
Crystal Range
Dumont Hills
Funeral Mountains
Grapevine Hills/Mountains
Lava Mountains
and many more. The mountains contain beautiful cities and even more beautiful scenery. Lake Tahoe, Mount Shasta, Auburn, and Nevada City are all up in the mountains in some way. The mountains are known for their national parks, specifically Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Park, all of which are stunning to see and explore. Lots of forests that house its wildlife, giant waterfalls, and even national monuments such as Devils Postpile and Giant Sequoia. Just exploring the mountains in general is calming and stunning to some, but could be unnerving to others. Mountain houses in California are generally more expensive than other homes in other regions due to the higher degree of slope. The more technical and thus more expensive it is to prepare the site for a home and driveway.
Leaving the northern mountains of California, the final region is the Valley Region also known as the Central Valley. There are two main valleys in California, those being the Los Angeles San Fernando Valley and the Central Valley. In the Central Valley, the largest cities with a population over 50,000 from most to least populous is as follows:
Sacramento
Fresno
Bakersfield
Stockton
Modesto
Elk Grove
Salinas
Visalia
Clovis
Merced
Santa Cruz
Turlock
Madera
Lodi
Tulare
Porterville
Handford
Delano
From ppic.org, by two-thousand five, about six point five million people lived in the Central Valley of California. Six point five million out of thirty-eight point nine seven million. The valley is known for its agricultural and country style. It supplies eight percent of U.S. agricultural output (by value) and produces one-fourth of the Nation’s food including forty percent of the Nation’s fruit, nuts, and other table foods. The valley usually has a pretty steady climate being nice and warm, but it can be dry, rainy, or cold. Houses in the California Valley can range from a few thousand dollars to over forty-three million.
Each region is unique in its own way and it mainly depends on who is being asked why they would like to live in one of those regions. Most people would say either coastal or mountain regions as they are the two more popular regions among the four, but there are a select number of people that would also choose valley or even desert who like the area that those regions represent. Each region is home to its animals and flora. Some people want to live the beach life, while some may want to live the country life. No matter where you end up living, enjoy the beauty that surrounds your area.
