Balloting time is officially here. This leaves many students wondering what elective to pick. Well here’s why to pick Journalism.
Journalism is a great course for those who enjoy writing and plan on pursuing a career in the media field which includes websites, blogs, social media, podcasts, photojournalism, and video. It’s also amazing at improving writing and social skills. Students learn a lot about the journalistic world and copyright rules and issues. Students are responsible for maintaining the online school newspaper, PawPrint as well as a paper version during the school year.
Along with this, Mrs. McCullough teaches journalism, and it’s refreshing to see a teacher so passionate about their subject. She truly loves journalism and it’s evident in the work she does for this class.
McCullough said, “I have journalism in my blood. My father worked for a big printing company when I was younger and I grew up listening to stories about printing on the presses, markups, customers, etc. and I was fascinated with it. Then I joined my junior high newspaper and eventually, I became the editor of my high school paper. I worked for over 10 years at McClatchy newspaper which is The Modesto Bee and The Fresno Bee while I was attending college and starting my teaching career. There are so many benefits to the skills learned in this class from speaking and actively listening to writing to digital applications. This class has it all, and in all of that, students build confidence in themselves and learn more about their school and the people who surround them on a daily basis.”
This class is very fun to take. It’s relatively easy and there’s always fun activities going on, such as creating the Journalism bulletin board and class potlucks.
If writing is not your thing and you want to explore a different pathway, there are numerous options as well! The main ones offered are Ag, LB2MC, Health, Business, AVID, and ASB.
There’s many different Ag pathways to choose from, but the new one is Ag Science 2. This pathway contains Ag bio, Ag chem, Floral design 1, and Floral design 2.
Another new program that is offered is the business pathway. This pathway includes a new class called Virtual Enterprise with advisor, Ms. Austin. This class runs similar to a real business by exploring accounting with quickbooks, assigning roles such as CEO, and learning budgeting. This class will also create a product or service and participate in a trade show competition. Overall if you’re interested in the business world this class might attract you.
Ballots, along with AP applications and work experience packets are due February 12 in the main office. If you have questions, see your counselor.
