On February 3, the Hispanic/Latino community united together to voice their opposition to the recent deportation under President Donald Trump’s intensified immigration policies.
These policies include stronger border security/enforcement by suspending undocumented migrants into the US, ending the use of the CBP One smartphone app where migrants can schedule appointments with border patrol agents, travel and visa restrictions and bans, removing unlawful migrants out the country, and increasing the power of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) to arrest and detain unlawful migrants.
This peaceful protest was part of the “Day Without Immigrants” movement, happening in not only Los Baños, but throughout the entire U.S. It aimed to show the many contributions of immigrants to the nation’s economy and culture.
Students did not attend school as a way of advocating for human rights and social justice.
Melody Dutra (11) said, “When I walked into school, it was much emptier, from the parking lots to the classrooms.”
Students attended the protest located at Pacheco Park with other friends and family to voice their opinions against the immigration policies which have impacted the community negatively. Hundreds of residents gathered, including students, people of all ages, protesting for the cause.
Melani Almanza (11) stated, “The protest was something beautiful in my opinion. It was very heartwarming seeing how our community came together and spoke up for what we believe is right and should not be happening during these times.”
The protest lasted well into the early evening hours.
