Golf is around the corner so it’s time to drive into gear and get ready for this new exciting season.
Golf tryouts will be on February 11 right after school, meeting near the basketball courts. Only 10 players will be selected to play for the school. Even when you’re not sure if you’re good enough to play, it doesn’t hurt to try out, moreover see what you’re capable of. This is a great opportunity to see if you like the sport or not. The head coach is Mr. Jeff Christensen who has been playing golf all his life, taught by his grandfather who played until he was 95! No matter what age you are, golf is a lifetime sport that everyone should at least try once.
Brokton Borelli (12) a golf player stated, “Golf is a sport you can play forever… you can play golf until you’re seventy-eighty years old. I always see people out there all the time and they’re still doing really well.”
Christensen has been coaching the men’s varsity team for two years and is looking forward to seeing new and old players develop their skill on the field. This season the golf team will play about 12 games and three tournaments.
This year the golf team is in the CCC league, mostly playing against teams from Merced. The difference this year for the golf team will be the drastic change from playing a 18 hole game to a 9 hole game instead, meaning shorter games and less walking. Playing an 18 hole game will mean walking 9 miles in the hot coaching sun with no golf cart in sight except your coaches, as he watches you walk continuously on endless grass. Meanwhile a 9 hole game is about a four and a half mile walk somewhat like a nice walk in the park.
Christensen believes this as a good change and see’s the players enjoying this new change for the league. Golf is a mental sport that requires a lot of skill. As you play golf you begin to realize you’re playing against yourself. Every action done in golf either benefits you or gets you further away from winning. Golf helps you challenge your mind and patience so why not challenge yourself and come join golf.
