The girls and boys wrestling team had eight athletes qualify for Masters: Ava Felix (12), Brokton Borelli (12), Marthell Buenrostro (12), Kolton Kanemoto (12), Angelina Borelli (11), Zander Gonzales (11), Michael Coehlo (10), and Alysiana Salas (9). Masters was held in Stockton on February 21 and 22 with team members moving on to the next day.
For myself this was a great accomplishment to make it this far. I never thought I would considering I’ve only wrestled for four months. I am beyond grateful for my coaches pushing me to do my best. Although at times it was difficult for me because I had to cut weight I managed to push myself to keep going. One thing I will miss the most is how it pushes me to be the best version of myself and the self discipline I learn from it.
Angelina Borelli was the only girl to make it to state and placed 2nd at masters. She has worked hard all season to make it this far and plans to accomplish much more.
Borelli stated, “I feel good about my performance; however, I feel like my performance at state will be the true time for me to show off my capabilities.”
Buenrostro is one of the boys who qualified for state placing 5th at masters. He has been wrestling since freshman year and going to state has always been one of his goals. Buenrostro stated, “I’m happy all of my hard work has paid off.”
His biggest challenge at masters was just the pressure of it being his last chance.
Brockton Borelli took first place at masters and is going on to state. He went to state last year and placed second place and this year he’s fighting for first. Recently he was nominated for the Sports Illustrated National High School Upper Weight Wrestler of the week. This is considered a big accomplishment in the wrestling community.
By the end 3 athletes of the 8 are moving onto state which are both Borellis and Buenrostro. State is held in Bakersfield, February 27 through March 1.
