When thinking of activities to do during spring break, you may get stumped. An activity worth checking out is the Path of the Padres hike. The Path of the Padres hike is a reservation only activity at the San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area. These hikes are only open for reservations in early spring.
The Path of the Padres begins with a 30 minute pontoon boat ride across the reservoir where hikers will disembark and begin a 5 mile, moderately strenuous hike that follows the same routes used by “padres” also known as Spanish missionaries from Mission San Juan Bautista. These trails stretch through the Los Banos Creek and Diablo Mountain Range. The hike takes approximately five hours.
The Path of the Padres hike is offered February through April. This walk is great for bird watching, poppy gazing, and learning about the history of early California and the local Indian tribes.
Before these trails were used by the padres they were used by Yokuts traders. As early as 1805 Spanish explorer Juan Bautista visited the Los Baños del Padre Arroyo. Along with this Father Felipe Arroyo De La Cuesta who traveled the trail to attract the Yokuts to work in San Juan Bautista.
To make a reservation, call 209-826-1197 Monday through Friday and be sure to be quick spots are limited. The cost is $20. Hikers should wear layers, a hat and sunscreen, and bring a lunch and water.
