Now that spring sports have officially started, the girls varsity softball team is ready for league play. Having played multiple pre-season games against tough teams, the team feels that they are prepared for the new league.
The Lady Tigers had their league opener against the Merced Bears at home, but they unfortunately couldn’t bring home the win. They lost a nail biter 2-3, but they have two more chances to beat them as in the CCC the teams play each other three times.
Senior captain, Mya Artisa said, “I expect to get a spot in the playoffs and to have an overall good season. It’s going to be a little challenging at first especially since we’re not familiar with the teams, but we should be able to compete with the other teams.”
Though they didn’t get the win against Merced, their next opponent was the Atwater Falcons at their home. With a couple of defensive errors, the Lady Tigers couldn’t match the offensive fire from the Falcons. With that, they lost 2-5 and had a lot of “what if’s” to think about.
Second Senior captain, Shayla Calderon said, “It’s going to be difficult, but I believe in the team and that we can battle against the other teams. Merced and Atwater are the most difficult teams, so playing them first was definitely hard.”
Given last year’s success, the team has a lot to live up to and the players know what they have to do to repeat last year’s goals. The Lady Tigers can all have the bat ready and fired up, but they do start off slow in the innings. Their defense also seems to be a little weak, yet the team is still pretty young so that will improve with more experience on the field.
Not all is lost as when the Tiger gets their bats going, they don’t stop. When the defense is on top of their stuff, then the Tigers are unstoppable. All of those factors depend on the games and what the atmosphere is. There are still a lot of games left in the season, so the Lady Tigers still have time to improve on everything.
Their next home game is on March 19 against Buhach, so go cheer on your Lady Tigers!
