The Creative Writing Club attended Fresno State’s Young Writers’ Conference (YWC) on April 9. Teresa Ayala Martinez (10) received honorable mention for her short story, “After Child.”
There were over 300 students in attendance from schools all over the Central Valley. Students submitted original works of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction in hopes of being selected to be published in the conference’s youth journal, The Spectrum.
Out of hundreds of submissions, only 25 students are selected to have their work published. Martinez’s story was published in Fresno State’s, The Spectrum, which celebrates the best work submitted by participating schools.
Students finished off their day on campus by taking a writer’s workshop offered by graduate students honing their creative writing skills. For many, this was their first time on a college campus.
Hosted annually by Fresno State’s Department of English, the YWC gathers hundreds of Central California’s brightest young writers and their teachers on campus for a day of creative writing and imagination. According to Fresno State’s website, “The conference provides a valuable opportunity for young writers to hear a professional author read their work and answer questions about the creative writing process and profession. It also allows young writers to meet and interact with other student writers from across Central California, to get a taste of what a university-level writing workshop might be like, and to receive feedback on their own writing.”
