Los Banos High school in its upcoming new school year and in the future has a new policy that has received some mixed signals. Starting August 12, students grades 9 through 12 will have PE offered for balloting because of the new state policy for the US.
High schools in California will offer more flexible options for fulfilling the mandatory physical education requirement which aims to provide students with more personalized options to accommodate their own interests.
The two-year requirement for grades 9 and 10 remains the same. The second to fourth year can be fulfilled through various courses including team sports, personal fitness, athletic P.E., and weight training.
As some expect, students have been upset about this new update within the school, but what do the PE teachers think about this new change?
Many people are unsure what this new change will bring into the school but when asked how she feels about the new change P.E. teacher Mrs. Barcellos states, “I think it’s very important for the students’ physical education, to have a healthy body and a healthy mind.”
A rather big change this new policy will bring is one that comes quite shocking, bringing something completely new to the high school. Mrs. Barcellos shared, “There is no more P.E. summer school for incoming freshmen and the high school will be offering two zero period classes instead for all grades.”
The new P.E. policy will allow students of all grades the opportunity to work out their bodies and minds with more physical abilities and classes. Students who have done varsity sports can choose to opt out of 10th grade P.E if they choose, or they can keep working on their physical strength with the new options PE will have to offer.
