Shayla Hernandez (12) is the starting first baseman for the Varsity softball team, showcasing her skills and leadership on the field. She began her softball journey at the age of seven and has dedicated the last ten years to perfecting her game.
Hernandez emphasized the importance of teamwork in her experience and when asked about her favorite part of playing she said, “My favorite part of playing softball is being able to play with my friends.”
As a captain, Hernandez understands the significance of staying composed in high-pressure situations. She explained her method for keeping a positive mindset during tough times is, “I try not to focus too much on the mistakes I made and to just let it go and move on.”
Goals are a crucial part of the game, and Hernandez set many for this season. The goal she said she wanted to focus most on this season was, “I really wanted to hit a homerun this season and I ended up accomplishing it mid season.”
Hernandez currently leads the team with the highest batting average at .429. She also has the highest on-base percentage at .529. Her impressive performance not only showcases her skills but also highlights her crucial role in the teams overall success this season.
Someone who has had a significant influence on Hernandez’s softball career, she mentioned, “My biggest influence is my dad because he was a really good baseball player and had inspired me to be the best that I could be in softball.”
Some advice Hernandez would give to someone who plays softball, she said, “I would say to enjoy every moment. It goes by way too fast to be caught up in the little things.”
The girls varsity softball team’s league play has come to an end with a record of 6-9. As of right now they don’t know if they have a spot in playoffs but are projected to be the twelfth seed in the Division four playoffs.
As for Hernandez, her softball journey will come to an end after high school. She plans on attending Monterey Bay College and majoring in Liberal Studies.
