On May 8, 2025 a new pope was elected. This was none other than Leo XIV, the first American pope.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the Augustinian Order, now known as Pope Leo XIV is the first pope to be born in North America. He is 69 years old and was born on September 14, 1955.
Prevost grew up in a devout Catholic family, raised attending church along with his parents and two brothers. Before becoming pope, Leo XIV was an Augustinian priest who performed extensive missionary work in Peru and was made a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023. Pope Leo XIV took his name in honor of the previous pope, Leo XIII, who was known for his social doctrine.
Known for his moderate stances, Pope Leo XIV has received positive feedback from various websites. According to SunSentinel.com, “Those who have worked with Pope Leo XIV are optimistic he’ll elevate women’s roles — with limits.” Before becoming Pope Leo XIV, Prevost had women serve on the Vatican board that would vet nominations for bishops. This was a revolutionary reform and gave women of Catholic faith an opportunity that had never been a possibility beforehand.
Pope Leo XIV is also a preacher of peace. According to citizensvoice.com, “Leo XIV’s first remarks as pope were poignant, consistent with his past work.” His first remarks were vowing to lead a church that “moves forward” and “always seeks peace.”
Overall, surpassing Pope Francis, Pope Leo XIV promises to lead a peaceful church that welcomes all. With 53 million Catholics in the nation, he vows to uphold the faith bestowed among his fellow followers.
Prevost is expected to continue the work of Pope Francis, including his focus on poverty and marginalized communities.
