Mikayla Mendoza (12) is continuing her academic journey at Lassen College, located in Susanville, California. In addition to pursuing her studies, Mendoza has committed to joining the college’s wrestling team, where she plans to further develop her skills and compete at the collegiate level.
Mendoza wasn’t sure if she would be able to wrestle in college after suffering a tough injury during a match, tearing her ACL,MCL, and meniscus, along with fracturing her tibia and femur.
The recovery process was long and challenging, and she ended up missing her entire senior season. Although it was disappointing not being able to compete in her final year of high school, Mendoza stayed focused on her rehab and never lost her connection to wrestling.
Now, after months of hard work and determination, she is heading to college and is set to continue her wrestling career at the next level.
Wrestling at the collegiate level wasn’t just a natural next step for Mendoza, it was a challenge she was ready to take on. Mendoza said, “It’s a good opportunity to go to the next level and see what I can do.”
Mendoza is equally committed to her academic goals and plans to major in Fire Science. She said, “I decided to major in Fire Science because I want to become a firefighter and it’s something that interested me. I also think it’s really cool to study.”
Mendoza is extremely passionate about pursuing a career in public safety and is excited to gain the knowledge and hands-on training necessary for a future in firefighting. She said, “I decided I wanted to become a firefighter because I grew up with a lot of my family being firefighters.”
Mendoza plans to live on campus as she starts this next chapter, balancing wrestling with her academics. After college she plans to become a firefighter as soon as possible. With determination and a strong work ethic, she’s ready for what comes next, both on the mat and beyond.
